World Cup: DR Congo reach Round of 32 after first-ever win

DR Congo are through to the knockout stages of the World Cup after a comeback victory over Uzbekistan.

DR Congo became the eighth African team to join the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup following their 3-1 victory over debutants Uzbekistan. Yoann Wissa, who also scored their goal in the sensational draw with Portugal, netted a brace to send the Leopards to uncharted territory.

Eldor Shomurodov scored a beautiful lob to put the debutants ahead as Uzbekistan were also dreaming of a first-ever World Cup victory. FC Augsburg’s Nathaniel Mbuku saw his goal nullified by VAR before Wissa converted from the spot in the 68th minute.

Substitute Fiston Mayele put them in a favorable position in the third-placed ranking before the Newcastle striker completed his brace with a brilliant finish. As a result, South Korea are the next team to be eliminated, while Iran will hope there will be a winner in the game between Austria and Algeria.

DR Congo will face England in their first World Cup knockout stage fixture. Colombia win Group K ahead of Portugal after the goalless draw between the teams.
