Is the government going to change the ration system? The new rule will affect millions of cardholders
New Delhi. The Central Government is preparing to implement a new system regarding the ration provided to the poor families of the country. The government has proposed changes to the National Food Security Act (NFSA). Under this, the quantity of grains to be given to the beneficiaries of Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) can now be decided on the basis of the number of family members.
The draft of the National Food Security Bill, 2026 has been prepared by the Department of Food and Public Distribution. Suggestions and objections have also been sought from people on this. This change is currently at the proposal stage. The government has sought suggestions from the public on the draft. New rules will be implemented only after all the processes are completed.
How to get ration now?
According to the current rule, ration card holders of Antyodaya Anna Yojana are given 35 kg of food grains per family every month. It does not matter how many members there are in the family. That means a family with one member and a large family also get the same amount of ration.
What will change in the new proposal?
According to the proposed rule, now the ration will be calculated on the basis of the number of family members. A provision has been made to provide 7 kg of food grains to every member every month. However, a family will get a maximum of 35 kg of grains only.
How much ration can a family get?
Family of 1 member: 7 kg grains
Family of 2: 14 kg grains
Family of 3: 21 kg grains
Family of 4: 28 kg grains
Family with 5 or more members: Maximum 35 kg of grains
This change may reduce the amount of ration for small families, while it will not have much impact on large families.
