Assam: Terrorist plot foiled in Tinsukia, four including two associates associated with ULFA (I) arrested

Tinsukia (Assam). Assam Police has foiled a major terrorist plot of the banned militant organization United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) in an operation based on intelligence information. Tinsukia District Police said on Sunday that a total of four accused have been arrested so far in this case.

Tinsukia Superintendent of Police (SP) Mayank Kumar told the media that two active cadres of ULFA (I) were arrested during an intelligence-based operation conducted in Jagun under Lekhapani police station area on June 26 in collaboration with central agencies and security forces. They have been identified as self-styled second lieutenant Sior Asom alias Humanjyoti Baruva (27) and self-styled second lieutenant Manoj Asom alias Papu Moran (30). Both had joined the organization in the year 2018 and have been involved in many terrorist incidents.

According to the SP, during interrogation the duo revealed that they were planning to carry out indiscriminate firing and grenade attack targeting civilians in Tinsukia city. The police took timely action and foiled this possible attack. He said that we have been successful in foiling this conspiracy. Tight security arrangements and high level of vigilance have been maintained in the district.

During the operation, security forces recovered two AK-series rifles, 172 rounds of ammunition, two grenades, backpack, jungle survival gear, food items, medicines and cash from the possession of the accused.

After this, the police launched another operation and arrested Bitu Bora and Kalp Bora, residents of Panitola, on charges of providing logistical support to the militants. According to the police, Bitu Bora’s Swift car (AR-20A-5892) was allegedly used by the two arrested cadres. At the same time, Kalp Bora, co-general secretary of ‘All Assam Matak Yuva Chhatra Parishad’, is accused of supporting ULFA (I).

According to police sources, during interrogation the duo allegedly confessed that the seized car was ordered at the behest of senior ULFA(I) cadre Aiseng Asom. Police have beefed up security across Tinsukia district and further investigation is underway to identify others involved in this alleged conspiracy and the larger support network.

It is noteworthy that, on June 26, in an intelligence-based operation conducted by Tinsukia Police with the help of central agencies and security forces, two active cadres of ULFA (I) were nabbed from Jagun under Lekhapani police station. They have been identified as self-styled second lieutenant Sior Asom alias Humanjyoti Baruva (27) and self-styled second lieutenant Manoj Asom alias Papu Moran (30). Both of them had joined ULFA (I) in the year 2018 and were solid cadres involved in many terrorist incidents.
