Hugo Broos Announces 2026 World Cup Will Be His Last

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has indicated that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be his final tournament as a coach following the nation’s exit from the competition.

After South Africa’s defeat to Canada in Los Angeles, decided by Stephen Eustaquio’s 92nd-minute goal, Broos stated, “It’s not clever to take decisions when you are disappointed. I will see in the next few days what I will do for the future. For sure, this is my last World Cup,” as reported by Reuters.

The loss ended a historic campaign during which South Africa reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in their history. Despite the disappointment, the team achieved a significant milestone that marked a breakthrough moment for South African football on the international stage.

Since taking charge in 2021, Broos has rebuilt South Africa into a disciplined and competitive side. His strategy focused on selecting a domestic-based squad, emphasizing cohesion, structure, and collective understanding rather than individual star power, guiding the team back to the global stage and into the Round of 32.

South Africa’s World Cup 2026 campaign recovered after a difficult start. The team suffered a 2–0 opening defeat to Mexico, which included two red cards, before earning a 1–1 draw against the Czech Republic and a 1–0 victory over South Korea.

This was the first occasion South Africa progressed beyond the group stage at a World Cup, having previously failed to do so in 1998, 2002, and as hosts in 2010.
