Australia defeated India and knocked them out of the semi-finals, Team India’s journey in T20 World Cup ends.
The journey of the Indian women’s cricket team in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 ended in the group stage itself. In the important match played at Lord’s, Australia not only won the match by defeating Team India by 6 wickets but also dashed India’s semi-final hopes. With this defeat, the Indian team captained by Harmanpreet Kaur was out of the tournament, while Australia remained unbeaten and secured its place in the semi-finals. After this result, South Africa also entered the last four on the basis of better net run rate.
The situation before the match was very exciting, as Australia had already reached the semi-finals and there was a direct competition between India and South Africa for the second place. India needed only a win to move ahead, but the team could not capitalize on this opportunity. India got off to a good start after winning the toss and batting first. Smriti Mandhana and Shefali Verma gave a fast start, with Shefali playing a useful inning of 34 runs. However, after the powerplay, the run pace slowed down and the first major partnership was broken at 66 runs in the 10th over. After this, Smriti Mandhana was run out after scoring 38 runs in the 12th over. After this, captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues took over the innings. Jemima scored 34 runs, while Harmanpreet Kaur batted brilliantly and played a quick inning of 56 runs in 25 balls and hit three consecutive sixes in the last over. Thanks to his innings, India scored a strong score of 170 runs. However, this score also proved to be small in front of Australia’s strong batting.
While chasing the target, Australia may have had a slow start and one wicket fell in the initial overs, but after that the team carried forward the innings with restraint. By the 10th over, Australia’s score was 68 runs and the match seemed to be a draw. But after this Alice Perry and Ashley Gardner completely changed the course of the match. Both the batsmen attacked the Indian bowlers aggressively and made an unbeaten partnership of 100 runs and the victory was almost certain. Ellis Perry scored 56 runs in 38 balls while Gardner played a stormy innings of 53 runs in 29 balls. Thanks to the brilliant batting of both, Australia achieved the target in the 19th over itself and India’s journey in the World Cup ended.
