Mallikarjun Kharge re-elected from Karnataka takes oath as Rajya Sabha member
New Delhi. Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge took oath as Rajya Sabha member on Monday. Kharge, who was recently re-elected to the Upper House from Karnataka, was administered the oath by Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan in the Speaker’s Chamber in Parliament House.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, House leader and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, party’s Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal and many senior leaders of various parties were present.
It is noteworthy that 83-year-old Kharge has been elected to Rajya Sabha from Karnataka for the second consecutive time. He is currently serving as the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha. Kharge, who has more than five decades of experience in public life, started his political journey from Karnataka politics. He won the Karnataka Assembly elections for the first time in the year 1972. After this, he was elected MLA for nine consecutive times and held the responsibility of many important departments in the state government. From 1999 to 2004, he also played the role of Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly.
In national politics, Kharge represented the Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency of Karnataka in the years 2009 and 2014. In the second term of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, he served as the Railway Minister and Labor and Employment Minister. From 2014 to 2019, he was the leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha. Kharge, who reached Rajya Sabha for the first time in the year 2020, was elected Congress President in October 2022. He is the 98th President of Congress. Presently he is playing an active role in the top organizational leadership of the party as well as as the voice of opposition in the Upper House of Parliament.
