JCB dug up 9 graves, administration gave compensation of Rs 100-100; controversy erupted

The controversy over the damage caused by JCB in a graveyard in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh and the nominal compensation given for it is deepening. The management committee of Ahle Muslimeen cemetery located in Manoharpura has alleged that during the work related to the Municipal Corporation, a JCB entered the cemetery, due to which nine graves, many trees and part of the boundary wall were damaged. After this, the administration fixed a compensation of only Rs 100-100 per loss, due to which there is resentment among the local people.

This incident is said to have happened on the night of 26th April, when the JCB was working near the government water tank. Meanwhile, the machine reached inside the cemetery and damaged many graves. After the incident, the committee demanded action from the administration and appropriate compensation but a dispute arose over the decided amount.

Cemetery committee raised questions on administration’s decision

Secretary of the cemetery committee, Shakir Hussain, raised questions on the decision of the administration and said that paying only Rs 100 for every damaged grave, tree and pillar is very insulting. He said that this is not compensation but disrespect to feelings and respect. Local people say that breaking the graves of their family members has caused deep mental trauma.

According to cemetery caretaker Sharif Khan, three of the nine graves were badly damaged, which cost around Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 per grave to restore. Whereas a total of Rs 3,500 was given by the administration (in the form of two separate cheques), which the committee has described as very low.

Demand for investigation and re-action

Cemetery Committee Chairman Jamaluddin said that this is a 117 year old Waqf property. After the incident, he had lodged a complaint on the IGRS portal but it was closed earlier. Later the complaint was reopened due to dissatisfaction. Now the local people and the committee are demanding an independent investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, Additional Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Singh said that the compensation has been given on the basis of departmental assessment and instructions have been given to the contractors to ensure that such incidents do not happen again. Besides, allegations of encroachment on Waqf land will also be investigated.
