Yasin Malik will be prosecuted in the 35-year-old Sarala Bhatt murder case, SIA filed 737-page charge sheet; 10 big things

What is the whole matter?

  1. SIA alleges that the murder of Sarla Bhatt was not limited to a single incident, but was part of JKLF’s alleged targeted violence, the aim of which was to create an atmosphere of fear. At that time, Sarla was working as a nurse in SKIMS Soura Hospital, Srinagar.
  2. According to the investigating agency, Sarla was allegedly kidnapped after finishing her duty at the hospital on April 18, 1990. It is alleged that he was taken to Ilahibagh-Lal Bazar area, where he was tortured and later shot dead. The next day his body was recovered from Mallabagh-Omer Colony Road in Srinagar.
  3. Apart from Yasin Malik, SIA has included the names of many other accused in its charge sheet. These include the names of Khurshid Ahmed Chalku, Abdul Hameed Sheikh, Mohammad Yusuf Sofi alias Idris and Ghulam Mohammad Taplu.
  4. Some of these accused have died, while Khurshid Chalku has been claimed to be absconding.
  5. The investigating agency says that to reinvestigate the nearly three and a half decade old case, statements of witnesses, forensic investigation, ballistic evidence, electronic records and old documents were used.
  6. SIA has alleged that Sarla Bhat was accused of being an informer of the security forces, but this was only an excuse to carry out the murder. According to the agency, this was a well-planned conspiracy.
  7. In the charge sheet, sections 364, 341, 201, 302 of IPC (along with sections 34 and 120B), several provisions of TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act) and sections 7 and 27 of the Arms Act have also been invoked.
  8. This case was originally registered as FIR number 56/1990 at Nigeen police station under sections of IPC and TADA.
  9. Yasin Malik is currently serving life imprisonment in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in a terrorist funding case. He participated in the hearing of this case through video conferencing.
  10. Now this case will proceed in the special TADA court of Srinagar. The investigating agency is calling the case reaching trial after almost 35 years as a major progress.
