‘I thought Ricky Ponting has become India’s coach…’; Michael Vaughan’s big statement on Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy

Lucknow: Former England captain Michael Vaughan has given an interesting reaction regarding the change in the captaincy of the Indian T20 team. He said that when he came to know that Shreyas Iyer has been made the captain of the T20 team in place of Suryakumar Yadav, his first reaction was that perhaps Ricky Ponting has become the new coach of the Indian team.

‘There is no dearth of talent in Indian cricket’

During a conversation on Ajinkya Rahane’s YouTube channel, Michael Vaughan said that the pair of Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting has always been impressive. According to him, Iyer is a brilliant captain and an excellent player. Vaughan said that the depth of talent in Indian cricket is so strong that such a decision becomes possible here, where a new captain is appointed in place of the captain who recently won the T20 World Cup.

Iyer and Ponting pair had a successful record

The partnership of Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting has been successful many times in franchise cricket. In the year 2020, Iyer was the captain and Ponting was the head coach for Delhi Capitals. That season the team reached the finals of IPL.

After this, both of them joined Punjab Kings in 2025 and played an important role in taking the team to the finals. In the 2026 season also, Punjab Kings made it to the playoffs.

Disappointing debut as Indian captain

Shreyas Iyer’s debut as Indian T20 captain was not as expected. Last Friday, under his captaincy, India had to face defeat by 34 runs against Ireland. This was reported to be the first time in international cricket history that Ireland defeated India.
