In the month of May, there was a phased increase in the prices of petrol and diesel. It is noteworthy that on May 15, 2026, there was a one-time increase of Rs 3 each in oil prices, after which the rates were revised on May 23 and again on May 25. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has exposed the main reasons for fuel becoming expensive: Crude oil crosses 115 dollars: Crude oil prices in the international market, which were earlier hovering around 64-65 dollars per barrel, have now jumped to around 115 dollars per barrel due to global conditions. Heavy losses to oil companies: Due to expensive crude oil and under-recovery (selling below cost) in the domestic market, the country’s oil marketing companies were facing huge losses of about Rs 1,000 crore every day. This total under-recovery is estimated to increase to around Rs 1.98 lakh crore, while the single quarterly loss of the companies is around Rs 1 lakh crore. India’s tough stance: The Petroleum Minister clarified that India was the only major country in the world which had kept fuel prices from increasing for a long time from 2022 onwards despite the global crisis, but this slight increase had become necessary in recent times to balance international pressure and huge deficit. Rule of Transparency: The Daily Pricing System of the Government of India ensures complete transparency so that consumers get information about the correct daily rates. There may be very slight variations in the retail market price depending on the commission of different petrol pumps at the local level.
