Qi 50W standard development
Xiaomi, Apple and Google are reportedly working with the Wireless Power Consortium on a new Qi 50W wireless charging standard. The goal is to move beyond the current Qi2 25W direction and create a faster, more universal wireless charging system for future devices.
Reports say the technical groundwork for the new standard has already been outlined, with hardware design parameters described as finalized. The standard is said to be targeted for an official release in 2028 if development stays on track.
Xiaomi’s role in the project
Xiaomi is being described as a key driver of the effort, with its own low-inductance, low-voltage high-power charging architecture reportedly shaping the draft standard. The company also hosted a recent Wireless Power Consortium meeting at its Beijing headquarters, where engineers discussed technical specifications, prototype testing and interoperability.
That meeting reportedly brought together representatives from Apple, Google, Huawei, Honor, Oppo and Vivo as well. The presence of multiple major brands suggests the industry is trying to build one cross-brand charging path rather than rely on separate proprietary fast-charging systems.
What Qi 50W could change
If the standard launches as planned, Qi 50W could make wireless charging much faster while keeping compatibility across more devices and accessories. The aim is to reduce brand lock-in, improve thermal management and lower power loss during charging.
The new standard could also make third-party chargers more useful, since users would not need to depend as heavily on brand-specific pads or stands. That would be a meaningful shift for both phone makers and buyers who want one charger for multiple devices.
Why it matters
Wireless charging has often been limited by slower speeds and fragmented implementation across brands. A shared 50W standard would be a major step toward making fast wireless charging feel as practical and predictable as wired charging for everyday users.
For now, the project is still under development, but the involvement of Apple, Google and Xiaomi points to serious momentum behind the idea. If the timeline holds, Qi 50W could become one of the most important charging standards in the next few years.
