Khamenei’s funeral in Iran, Governor Ata Hasnain and MoS Pavitra Margherita will attend from India’s side.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Funeral: The Government of India will send Minister of State for External Affairs Pavitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain to attend the funeral of former Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. ANI has confirmed this on Monday.

Last week, Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The funeral rituals will begin on July 4 and end with his burial on July 9 in the holy city of Mashhad in north-eastern Iran, where he was born.

Khamenei died on the first day of Israeli and US airstrike

Khamenei, 86, died on February 28, the first day of Israeli and US air strikes on Tehran. He led the Islamic Republic as Supreme Leader for 36 years. State media said funeral arrangements would also be held on July 7 in Qom, another holy city south of Tehran.

There was speculation about the date of Khamenei’s funeral since his assassination in February. Under Islamic law, the dead must be buried as soon as possible, preferably within a day of death, although some exceptions are made, especially during war. Initial reports said he could be buried in late June, before state media confirmed the ceremonies would take place in July.

20 million people expected to attend the funeral

About 20 million people are expected to attend the funeral in Tehran, Mashhad and Qom. Pakistani officials including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif are also expected to attend. If the number of people matches these estimates, it could exceed the 10 million reported at the funeral of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in 1989.

Will Mojtaba Khamenei appear in front of everyone at his father’s funeral?

All eyes will be on whether Iran’s current Supreme Leader, 56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei, will appear at the funeral or not. He has not been seen in public or on video since he was injured in the airstrike on February 28, in which his father was killed.

Questions have been raised regarding his health and his whereabouts. Several senior US officials, including Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth, have claimed that he is in a coma. Meanwhile, Iran’s state media has reported that he has suffered serious facial injuries and leg injuries, but has not confirmed his current condition.

Fuel and energy shortage worldwide due to West Asia crisis

The development comes after Iran and the US agreed to a peace deal following months of conflict that has plunged West Asia into crisis and led to fuel and energy shortages across the world. Pejeshkian and US President Donald Trump signed separate digital MoUs, while long-term peace talks between the two sides continue in Switzerland.
