Two Indian Army personnel, Lakshya and Ujjwal Kumar Singh created history by winning the first gold medal for the country in the 2026 World Rowing Cup III in Switzerland held in Lucerne, Switzerland. In the final of the lightweight men’s double sculls, the Indian duo of Lakshya and Ujjwal Kumar Singh put in a brilliant performance to clinch the top spot with a time of 6 minutes 26.09 seconds. They faced stiff competition from pairs from Hong Kong and the Netherlands, but put in a strong performance to clinch the gold medal.

The country won the gold medal for the first time in the World Rowing Cup series

Lakshya and Ujjwal Kumar Singh became the first Indian pair to win a gold medal for the country in their very first World Rowing Cup series. He finished the race in 6:26.09, while Hong Kong’s San Tung Lam and Tick Lun Chan finished second in 6:27.14. Erik van Eyck van Heslinga and Frederik Ploeg of the Netherlands finished third in 6:27.36. Both Lakshya and Ujjwal Kumar Singh are soldiers in the Indian Army and are part of the Indian contingent in Lucerne. The 18-member team participating in this regatta includes 17 athletes from the Indian Army and one from the Indian Navy. The regatta took place on Lucerne’s famous Lake Rotsey. The lake is considered one of the best rowing venues in the world due to its 2000-metre-long, six-lane course.

Previously won 3 bronze medals

India had won three bronze medals before winning the gold medal at the World Rowing Cup. The first medal was won in 2009 in the women’s category, while the second and third medals were won in 2019 and 2022 in the para-pair category. More than 650 athletes from 42 countries took part in the third World Rowing Cup held in Lucerne from 26 to 28 June, and the event is an important step towards the World Rowing Championships later this year.
