The entire process started after Fajr prayers, which was on 15 Muharram 1448 AH as per the Islamic calendar. The responsibility of this entire arrangement was entrusted to the General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, which maintained high standards of purity and sanctity.
Three main stages of the washing process
The ritual of washing the Kaaba was divided into three distinct parts:
- Preparation: First of all, necessary technical arrangements were made and the lower part of the curtain of the Kaaba door was raised so that the Kiswa (black cloth) could be saved. After this a mixture of Zamzam water and special oud oil was prepared.
- Washing: The inner walls, pillars and floor of the Kaaba were cleaned with special cloths. A mixture of Zamzam water, Taaf rose water, Kaaba washing perfume and musk was used in it.
- Fragrance and incense: After washing, oud oil was applied on the walls and corners and the interiors were incensed with premium Bakhoor.
The floor of the Kaaba was washed with Zamzam water and rose water and then dried by hands with the help of towels and palm leaves.
On this occasion, many senior officials, Imams, religious scholars, Islamic diplomats posted in Saudi Arabia and the guardians of Kaaba were present. This ritual is considered a symbol of unity of the Muslim community all over the world.
