Extra time drama
After the match was tied 1-1 at the end of regular time, it went into extra time. In the 101st minute, Germany’s Jonathan Tah scored a brilliant header off a corner kick. The entire German team cheered as they booked their place in the Round of 16. But then Moroccan on-field referee Jalal Zayed signaled for a review from the VAR room. Replays showed that German defender Waldemar Anton made contact with Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gil at the time the goal was scored. After a lengthy review, the referee disallowed the goal, much to the shock of German fans and players.
We have been duped – Mueller
Müller, furious at the decision, said, “To be honest, I don’t know what the VAR is looking at now! Jonathan Tah had a fantastic strike on the ball, it was a perfectly legitimate goal. This decision puts Germany out of the tournament.” He added, “We Germans feel cheated today. It’s a broad daylight robbery on football’s biggest stage. If this is a foul, then football has lost its relevance, because there have been far more aggressive fouls in this competition. It seems technology has punished us today, not saved us.”
