Asian Games 2026: Big announcement by BCCI, Harmanpreet Kaur will lead Team India in Asian Games

New Delhi: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a 15-member women’s cricket team for the upcoming Asian Games to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan in September 2026. Putting an end to the questions being raised regarding captaincy after the disappointing performance in the recently concluded Women’s T20 World Cup, the selection committee has appointed 35-year-old experienced player Harmanpreet Kaur. (Harmanpreet Kaur) But he has kept his faith intact. Harmanpreet will be seen commanding the team in the upcoming continental tournament, while star batsman Smriti Mandhana has been given the responsibility of vice-captain. This time the Indian team will take the field with the intention of defending its title in the tournament.

Got a chance after the disappointment of T20 World Cup

This announcement comes just a day after the Indian women’s team qualified for the Los Angeles Olympics. It is noteworthy that the Indian team was out of the tournament after losing to South Africa and Australia in the group stage of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 held in England. After this poor performance, questions were constantly being raised on the future of Harmanpreet Kaur and her captaincy. This failure was also shocking because the Indian team had won the first ODI World Cup on its home soil only last year. However, due to technical and strategic mistakes in the T20 World Cup, the team had to make an early exit.

Shreyanka Patil’s fitness will be monitored

All-rounder Shreyanka Patil has also been included in this 15-member team announced by BCCI, but her playing will completely depend on her fitness report. Shreyanka was ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to an ankle injury (twisted ankle) and is currently undergoing recovery. There is a good mix of young and experienced players in the team, in which Richa Ghosh and G. Kamalini has been included.
