Who is General Dheeraj Seth, India’s 31st Army Chief and a member of the Armoured Corps:

Read, Digital Desk : General Dheeraj Kumar Seth assumed command as the 31st Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army on Tuesday, June 30. He succeeds General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired from service on Tuesday. General Seth is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. He was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986.

According to the Ministry of Defence, during his illustrious military career spanning nearly four decades, he has gained experience in operational, strategic, capability development and institutional areas. He has made significant contributions to the combat capability and long-term transformation of the Indian Army.

He has taken over the command of the Sudarshan Chakra Corps.

Lieutenant General Seth has commanded an armoured regiment in the desert area and a counter-insurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir. After being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General, Lieutenant General Seth commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps and later served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Delhi.

As Army Commander, Lieutenant General Seth has commanded both the South Western Command and the Southern Command, thus becoming one of the few officers of the Indian Army to have commanded two operational Army Commands on the Western Front.

Sharing a post on X, ADG Public Information of the Indian Army wrote, ‘General Upendra Dwivedi was given a ceremonial ‘Guard of Honour’ at the South Block Lawns in New Delhi on the occasion of his relinquishing the post of Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

“His illustrious career, spanning over four decades, reflects a legacy of selfless service, inspirational leadership, and unwavering commitment to the nation. He has left an indelible mark on the Indian Army and its continued journey towards transformation.”

Former Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi expressed confidence in the next Army Chief’s abilities, saying, “He is an experienced soldier and a capable leader. I am confident that under his leadership, the Indian Army will achieve greater heights while maintaining its glorious traditions, professionalism, and resolve.”

Today, as I hand over this responsibility, I have full confidence in the future of the Indian Army; it will remain true to its traditions, alert to current challenges and always prepared for any future eventuality.

General Dwivedi said that the Indian Army derives its strength not from any one individual, but from the trust of its soldiers, commanders, veterans, families and citizens of the country. “I salute every soldier of the Indian Army, including those who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.”
