A class was going on in the tuition center when its roof collapsed.

Lahore: A tragic accident took place in Lahore, Pakistan on Tuesday. At least 14 children died after the roof of a private tuition center running in an under-construction building collapsed. 20 others were injured. More than 30 children aged seven to 13 were taking classes at the academy, located in the densely populated Kahana Nau area, when suddenly the roof collapsed and the children were buried under the debris, police said.

Search is on for people buried under the debris
Lahore Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) Faizal Kamran, while talking to the media, said, ‘So far bodies of 14 children have been recovered from the debris. 20 injured children and a female teacher have been admitted to the hospital. Rescue teams are continuously carrying out operations to search for other people trapped under the debris.

contractor arrested
Police officer Kamran said, ‘A part of the building was under construction and the workers were engaged in work when the roof collapsed. We have arrested the contractor. Lahore District Education Authority Chief Executive Officer Tariq Mehmood said that a private tuition center was being run in this building by a woman from the area. Edhi Foundation said that the roof of the academy running in the residential building located in Basti Idgah of Kahana Nau area suddenly collapsed.

Death toll may increase
“The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the mortuary of the General Hospital,” the NGO said in a statement. The organization also expressed fear that the death toll may increase as some children are still trapped under the debris. The organization said that the injured have been admitted to the hospital, where their condition is said to be stable. The organization said that the rescue operation is being carried out rapidly. Edhi Foundation ambulances are deployed at the spot, which are providing emergency medical aid.

CM Maryam gave strict instructions against those responsible
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the police and district administration to identify those responsible for the accident and initiate criminal action against them. Provincial health officials declared an emergency at Lahore General Hospital and directed senior administrative officials, doctors, nurses and paramedical staff to ensure immediate treatment of the injured.
