Who is Rajiv Kumar: The board of directors of HDFC Bank on Monday appointed former Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar as its new chairman. HDFC Bank has appointed him as Independent Director for 4 years. Now he will take charge of HDFC Bank, one of the largest private banks in the country, as Chairman. This appointment will come into effect from June 30, 2026. According to HDFC Bank, the appointment of Rajeev Kumar depends on the approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

After getting the approval from RBI, he will also hold the post of part-time chairman of the bank for 3 years. But, the question still remains in people’s mind as to who is Rajiv Kumar. Let us tell you about them.

Who is Rajiv Kumar?

Rajeev Kumar, appointed to the post of Chairman of HDFC Bank, has been a senior officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). He has been in administrative career for a long time and during this time he has handled many important responsibilities. He has been the Secretary of the Department of Financial Services (DFS) from 2017 to 2020. After this he was made the 25th Chief Election Commissioner of India.

During his tenure, the Lok Sabha elections of 2024 were also held, which was quite successful. While being the Secretary of the Financial Services Department, Rajiv Kumar has made many major reforms in the public sector banks. Under his leadership, loan reforms were also done to a large extent in banks. Therefore, they are considered to play an important role in the banking sector also.

HDFC Bank may get strength

Rajeev Kumar has long experience in the banking and finance sector, which is expected to provide a new strategic strength to HDFC Bank. His experience can bring good improvement in the bank even in the public sector. According to media reports, Rajiv Kumar will replace former HDFC Bank chairman Atanu Chakraborty. Chakraborty resigned from his post in March 2026 citing ethical reasons.
