Mavericks Emerge as Leading Suitor for Marcus Sasser

The Dallas Mavericks have reportedly emerged as the leading candidate to acquire Detroit Pistons guard Marcus Sasser in a potential offseason trade. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Dallas is actively pursuing the 25-year-old guard as the franchise looks to strengthen its backcourt ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Sasser, a Dallas-area native who starred at Red Oak High School before playing college basketball at the University of Houston, could be returning home if the deal is completed. His familiarity with the area and his shooting ability make him an attractive target for the Mavericks.

The 2023 first-round pick struggled to secure a consistent role with Detroit during the 2025-26 season, appearing in 38 games while averaging 5.2 points and 2.0 assists in just 12 minutes per game. Despite the limited opportunities, Sasser continued to showcase his perimeter shooting, connecting on more than 41% of his three-point attempts.

Dallas is searching for additional scoring and shooting in its guard rotation, and Sasser fits that profile. At just 25 years old, he still possesses significant upside and remains on the final year of his rookie contract, making him a relatively low-risk acquisition for the Mavericks.

While the exact structure of the trade has not been finalized, reports indicate that discussions could involve draft compensation or become part of a larger multi-team transaction. Some league insiders believe the Mavericks could use one of their existing trade exceptions to facilitate the move, while other veteran players or draft picks may also be included depending on negotiations.

As NBA free agency unfolds, Sasser’s future appears increasingly likely to be away from Detroit. If the trade goes through, the Mavericks would add a young, athletic guard capable of providing instant offense and perimeter shooting, while giving Sasser a fresh opportunity to earn a larger role with his hometown team.
