More players now buy and download games online, and Sony says that shift is strong enough to justify moving new releases away from physical media. For the company, this is not just a production change, but a clear sign of where it sees the future of PlayStation.

What changes for players

This transition does not affect games that have already been released, or titles that launch before January 2028 in disc format. Those games will continue to exist as physical editions, so existing collections and upcoming disc-based releases before the cutoff are safe.

What changes is the path forward for brand-new titles. Once the switch takes effect, players should expect digital downloads to become the default for future PlayStation games. That could make shopping simpler for some users, but it will also mean fewer physical copies on store shelves and less opportunity for collectors to buy boxed editions.

Sony has also indicated that physical retail may not disappear entirely right away. Stores could still sell PlayStation game packages, but those may increasingly contain download codes instead of actual discs. In other words, the traditional box could remain, even if the disc inside does not.
