Regarding the new feature, WhatsApp has clarified that usernames will not be searchable. Which simply means that no one will be able to find you just by typing your username. Unless you share your username with someone, he will not be able to start a conversation with you. Due to which the possibility of unwanted messages and spam to any user will be reduced to a great extent.

Username Key will provide an additional layer of security

Along with this, to increase the security of the users, the company has also introduced username key. Using this, even if someone gets access to your username, he will still need this security key to start chatting. The good thing is that users can change or reset this key at any time, which will immediately stop the access of suspicious people.

Government’s concern and WhatsApp’s response

As it has just come to light that the IT Ministry of the Government of India has issued a notice to Meta asking it to stop the rollout of this feature for the time being. The government believes that criminals can misuse this facility to defraud people by posing as government officials, bank employees or other trustworthy persons. In such cases, the danger of digital arrest and increase in online financial fraud has also been expressed.

Whereas WhatsApp says that if you receive a message from an unknown username for the first time, a safety alert will appear on the screen. Due to which important information related to the country and account of the message sender will be shown. Also, the option of Block and Report will also be available immediately. According to the company, this feature will be released to all users in a phased manner by the end of this year.
