How much water is required to make 1 liter ethanol? Government called social media claims misleading, released facts
Tezzbuzz Desk- The Central Government has issued a major clarification amid the ongoing claims on social media regarding mixing of ethanol (E20) with petrol in the country. It was being claimed in many posts that about 10,000 liters of water is used to make 1 liter of ethanol, which the government has termed as completely misleading.
According to government reports, the ethanol production process is done as per scientific standards and the claims being spread regarding water usage are far from reality.
How much water is required in 1 liter ethanol?
The government has clarified that approximately 3 to 5 liters of processed water is required to produce 1 liter of ethanol. This water is recycled after use in modern distillery units through Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) technology, which keeps water wastage to a minimum.
What is ethanol made from?
According to the government clarification, ethanol is produced mainly from raw materials that are left as surplus after food security, such as corn, other grains, agriculture-based biomass. The aim of this process is to create alternative energy sources without affecting food security.
What do the tests say about E20 fuel?
According to tests conducted by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the use of E20 fuel has been shown to reduce vehicle emissions. Carbon monoxide emissions are reduced by approximately 50% in two-wheelers and by approximately 30% in four-wheelers. It was also informed that E20 fuel conforms to international standards and is certified for safe use.
What is the truth about mileage and engine?
The government and organizations related to the auto sector have also rejected the claims of engine failure or major drop in mileage. According to SIAM and PIB Fact Check, E20 fuel does not affect the warranty of the vehicle. No major negative changes in mileage were observed. Higher octane rating may result in better pickup and performance.
Achievements of Ethanol Blending Program
According to government data, the ethanol blending program has strengthened the country’s energy policy over the years, saving over ₹1.90 lakh crore of foreign exchange from 2014-15 to May 2026. Direct payment of over ₹1.60 lakh crore to farmers. Ethanol blending in petrol increased from 1.5% (2013-14) to 20% (E20) target by December 2025.
The government has made it clear that many claims being spread on social media regarding ethanol production and E20 fuel are false. According to actual scientific data, it is not only beneficial for the environment but also strengthens the country’s energy self-sufficiency.
