Government’s big action: Instructions to remove 7 Chinese apps including BAT-BMS, which were being used to stop e-rickshaws

The Central Government has taken a big step in view of the possible cyber risks related to the security of e-rickshaws. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued notices to Google Android and Apple iOS directing them to remove seven Chinese-origin apps including BAT-BMS from their app stores. It is being told that these apps were allegedly being used to remotely shut down the e-rickshaw by misusing the Battery Management System (BMS).

Concern increased after social media video

In recent days, some videos viral on social media claimed that mischievous elements are remotely shutting down e-rickshaws through BAT-BMS app. After these claims came to light, the government took cognizance of the matter and started immediate action.

Action taken on which apps?

According to sources, the apps which have been directed to be removed include a total of seven apps including BAT-BMS, SMART BMS, Epoch-i-ion and LOSSIGY. The ministry says that app stores need to be more vigilant on the scrutiny and security standards of such applications.

The government says that the safety of common citizens and e-rickshaw drivers is the top priority. With this objective in mind, steps have been taken to remove suspicious apps and further strengthen the security standards on digital platforms.

How was the alleged abuse happening?

According to experts, some Chinese BMSs used in many low-cost e-rickshaws do not provide adequate security and authentication during Bluetooth connections. In such a situation, if the vehicle is at a distance of 10–15 meters, then the related app can allegedly connect to the BMS without permission and turn off the battery discharge switch. Due to this, the power supply to the motor stops and the e-rickshaw may stop running.

What is BAT-BMS App?

BAT-BMS is a mobile application developed by Shenzhen Greenenergy Technology. This app is designed to monitor and manage smart lithium-ion batteries. Through this, users can see the battery’s charging level, voltage, temperature, current and other technical information. Some compatible batteries also have the ability to control charging and discharging settings.
