Responding to this, the government clarified that ethanol is mainly produced from surplus grains and maize i.e. from the stock left over after ensuring food security. In reality, only 3 to 5 liters of treated water are required to produce one liter of ethanol, and modern distilleries recycle this water using ‘zero liquid discharge’ technology. Moreover, tests conducted by the ‘Automotive Research Association of India’ (ARAI) have shown that E20 fuel reduces carbon monoxide emissions in two-wheelers by around 50 percent and four-wheelers by up to 30 percent.

There is no risk to the engine, mileage or warranty
Claims such as engine damage, reduction in mileage and voiding of warranty have also been said by the government to be completely baseless. Evaluations have shown that there is no significant negative impact on mileage. Conversely, ethanol’s higher octane rating improves vehicle ‘pickup’ and makes the driving experience more pleasant. A SIAM and PIB fact check has clarified that using E20 fuel following the prescribed standards does not adversely affect the warranty or insurance coverage of the vehicle.
A major success story of the ethanol blending program
Since 2014-15, this program has played a significant role in the country’s economy and environmental conservation. According to government data, the initiative has so far saved over Rs 1.90 lakh crore in foreign exchange. Also, farmers have received prompt payments totaling over Rs 1.60 lakh crore. Ethanol blending in India, which was only 1.5 per cent in 2013-14, is on track to successfully meet the target of 20 per cent (E20) by December 2025; Which has significantly reduced the country’s dependence on crude oil.
