Criticism of Chief Minister Vijay is costly; Former DMK Minister Arrested, Former Chief Minister Stalin Furious

Former DMK Minister and MLA Anita R. in the case of alleged offensive remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay Joseph. Radhakrishnan has been arrested by the police. The action was taken after the Madras High Court rejected his anticipatory bail application.

Radhakrishnan was detained by the police while he was on a tour at Athur, about 23 km from Tuticorin. After his arrest, supporters raised slogans and protested the police action.

Allegation of offensive statements

According to information received, Radhakrishnan had allegedly made offensive remarks against Chief Minister Vijay in an event held on June 20. After that, the ruling TVK party filed a complaint with the police.

On the basis of this complaint, a case was registered against him under Section 352 (willful insult with intent to disturb the peace) and Section 353(2) (making statements causing public disturbance) of the Indian Penal Code.

High Court denied anticipatory bail

While hearing the pre-arrest bail application, Justice G. K. Ilanthirayan observed that it is not appropriate to make such statements as an MLA. The court then rejected the anticipatory bail application and the police arrested Radhakrishnan.

Stalin’s attack on the government

DMK president and former chief minister M.K. Stalin has expressed a strong reaction to this arrest. Stalin said, “Why was there such a rush to arrest Radhakrishnan when he was in his constituency?”

He further alleged that the ruling TVK has yet to take any action on serious allegations against one of its MLAs. While the state government is failing to curb murders, robberies and crimes against women, it is taking swift action against opposition leaders.

‘Trying to target opponents’

Stalin accused Chief Minister Vijay of trying to retain power by targeting the opposition. DMK MP Kanimoli Karunanidhi also condemned the arrest, saying, “DMK will not bow down to the politics of oppression.”

Meanwhile, the allegation in this case is under judicial process and the final decision has not been taken yet. Hence, the relevant allegations are yet to be verified by the court.
