Delhi government ended work from home system of government employees, also changed office timings

The Delhi government has decided to end the work from home (WFH) facility being provided to government employees on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Information in this regard was given by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO). According to the Chief Minister’s Office, in view of the normalization of the geo-political situation, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved ending this system. Earlier, due to some special circumstances, employees were allowed to work from home two days a week. It was told by the government that a formal order regarding this decision will be issued soon. After the order is issued, employees in all concerned departments will have to work under normal office arrangements.

mcd no change in time

Along with changes in the Work From Home (WFH) policy for government employees, office timings have also been amended. After ending the work from home facility being provided on Wednesday and Saturday, the government has now implemented new office timings. According to the new schedule, all Delhi government offices will now operate from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm. The government says that this will ensure greater coordination and efficiency in administrative work. At the same time, there has been no change in the office timings of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The offices of the corporation will continue to function from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm as before.

Major changes made in the orders issued in May

Under the recent decision, Delhi Government has made major changes in the administrative arrangements related to austerity (expense cut) and fuel saving implemented earlier. With this, the work from home (WFH) facility of government employees has been abolished. Earlier in May, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the government had launched several administrative initiatives aimed at reducing pollution, providing relief from traffic jams and reducing fuel consumption. These steps were taken at the global level amid economic uncertainties arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia. According to sources, this decision is also being seen after the appeal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which he had talked about maintaining economic stability and strength in view of the global circumstances. Now after the situation becomes normal, the government has decided to withdraw these temporary arrangements.

‘Metro Monday’ was also a part of the campaign

The Delhi government had earlier introduced initiatives like 2 days work from home and ‘Metro Monday’ for government employees as part of administrative orders related to environment and fuel savings. The aim of these initiatives was to promote the use of public transport and reduce traffic and pollution pressures. Under these arrangements, ministers and senior officials were also encouraged to use public transport, so that an example could be set at the government level. Apart from this, the government had also decided to ban all official foreign tours of ministers and officials for 1 year. Besides, a six-month ban on the purchase of new petrol, diesel, CNG and hybrid vehicles was also implemented for the Delhi government.

After the appeal of ‘No Vehicle Day’, normal administrative order has now been restored.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had earlier appealed to citizens to observe ‘No Vehicle Day’ every week to reduce air pollution and traffic pressure in the capital. Along with this, institutions were also encouraged to adopt more and more systems like online hearings and digital lectures to reduce the need for transportation. The aim of the government at that time was to reduce the number of private vehicles in the city and promote public and digital means, so that pollution and traffic pressure could be controlled. However, now that the situation has stabilized, the government has made changes in the administrative arrangements and decided that the functioning of government offices will be conducted normally again by maintaining various time-based formats keeping in mind the traffic management.
