Sanju Samson’s poor batting form has seen many fans clamour for the youngster’s inclusion in the side. Rajasthan Royals star was widely tipped to make his international debut during the recent tour of Ireland. That thought didn’t happen as the team management decided to back Samson.
Speaking to the media ahead of the game on Saturday, bowling coach Morne Morkel said that the decision to play Vaibhav wasn’t straightforward. The 42-year-old also said that Abhishek Sharma was ranked the world number 1 batter not too long ago, while Sanju was the player of the tournament during the T20 World Cup 2026 and deserved to be persisted with.
Former South African pacer also added that the Chennai Super Kings batter had a great time during the IPL 2026 season. So it is only fair for the management to back their performers, and it is always exciting that a young player is knocking on the doors of selection. And it will be a good sign for others if players under pressure are backed to the hilt.”
Parthiv Patel urges caution regarding the prodigy’s expected debut
Former Indian wicketkeeper and batter Parthiv Patel himself made his India debut at the age of 17 during the 2002 Nottingham Test match. Patel, speaking to JioStar, was heard saying, “Feel that Vaibhav will surely get a chance at some point during this series. Communication between the management and players is very important.”
The IPL winner also added, “He is just a young kid; one has to be careful with him and ask him to show patience. There are a lot of players who have done well previously. Ishan and Abhishek are world number 1 and 2 in the rankings, while Samson had a great World Cup. Sadly, there is no place for the youngster, which has to be communicated.”
