Special Judge Vishal Gogane of Rouse Avenue Court had earlier reserved his decision on Friday. MLA Raju Singh’s lawyer, while defending him in the court, cited his good conduct and long political career. The lawyer said that he is a 6-time MLA and is involved in social service related works. He has not been convicted in any case before. The lawyer argued that he should be sentenced to less than 2 years.

The defense said that if their client was sentenced to more than 2 years, he would lose his legal capacity. However, ignoring these arguments of the defence, the court sentenced him to 4 years in jail and a compensation of Rs 25 lakh. The court said that harsh firing has become a serious social curse and has resulted in the loss of many innocent lives. It is noteworthy that under Section 8 (3) of the Representation of the People Act-1951, if any MP or MLA is sentenced to 2 years or more in any criminal case, then his membership of Parliament or Assembly is automatically cancelled.
