Government’s notice to Telegram to remove pirated movies and OTT content, action report sought in 15 days

To curb the increasing digital piracy in the country, the central government has launched a messaging platform. Telegram Strict action has been taken against. Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B Ministry) has issued a notice to the company directing it to immediately remove pirated movies, web series and other OTT content available on its platform.

The ministry has asked Telegram to take immediate action against all copyrighted content being shared illegally and submit a detailed report on the steps taken in this regard. within 15 days Hand over to the government.

The government believes that due to online piracy the film and OTT industry suffers huge economic losses every year. As soon as new films and web series are released, their illegal dissemination starts happening through various digital platforms and channels, which affects the income of content creators.

According to sources, the ministry conducted an investigation following complaints from several OTT platforms and content owners, in which around 3,142 Telegram channels Was identified. Movies and web series were allegedly being broadcast on these channels without permission.

The government has given this notice Information Technology Act, 2000 And IT Rules, 2021 Is issued under. As per the rules, it is mandatory for online platforms to remove illegal content following a government or court order.

The government says that the username feature can be misused in cases like identity theft, creating fake accounts and online fraud. For this reason, companies have been asked what security measures they are implementing to prevent such misuse.

This step of the government is being considered an important initiative towards curbing online piracy in the country, protecting the rights of digital content creators and promoting a safe and responsible digital ecosystem on the internet.
