Mumbai, 5 July. Continuous torrential rains in the country’s financial capital Mumbai have badly affected life. Waterlogging has occurred in many low-lying areas of the city. The maximum impact was seen at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Kurla, where passengers and drivers faced a lot of problems due to water logging in the station premises.
Considering the seriousness of the situation, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and Thane districts. According to the Meteorological Department, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely to continue in the next few hours. The administration has appealed to the people to come out of their homes only when absolutely necessary and follow weather warnings.
Highest rainfall of 253 mm in Vikhroli
According to data recorded from 8:30 am on July 4 to 5:30 am on July 5, Vikhroli recorded the highest rainfall of 253.0 mm. Apart from this, 252.5 mm rainfall was recorded in Ram Mandir area, 224.5 mm in Santa Cruz, 172.5 mm in Byculla, 169.0 mm in Vidyavihar, 165.5 mm in Colaba, 157.5 mm in Sion and 136.0 mm in Chembur. It is clear from these data that most parts of Mumbai received excessive rainfall, due to which waterlogging and traffic system were seriously affected.
Impact on railways and traffic
The impact of continuous rain was also visible on railway services and road traffic. Due to water logging in the premises of Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), passengers faced a lot of difficulty in reaching and exiting the station. Due to waterlogging on many major roads, long queues of vehicles formed and people were stuck in traffic jams for hours. The speed of vehicles became extremely slow on many routes.
Warning for other parts of Maharashtra also
IMD has also issued weather alerts for other areas of Maharashtra. Orange alert has been issued for the Konkan region and Pune Ghats, where heavy rains are expected to trigger landslides at some places. At the same time, yellow alert has been issued for Pune city, where there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms. The administration said that disaster management teams have been deployed in sensitive areas and the situation is being constantly monitored. Citizens have been appealed to avoid rumours, rely on official weather updates and stay in safe places.
