Why are 3000 graves being dug for Khamenei’s funeral?

Tehran. A shocking claim has come to light regarding the funeral of former Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei. A report in German newspaper Die Welt said that the Iranian administration has prepared a special emergency plan to deal with a possible major accident during the funeral. According to the report, a worst-case scenario of 1,500 to 3,000 deaths has been estimated considering the potential crowd of lakhs of people, extreme heat and security challenges. In Iran, the funeral programs that started on Saturday are to continue for several days in different cities. According to reports, the Iranian Red Crescent Society and the National Crisis Management Organization have reportedly sent a confidential letter to First Vice President Mohammad Reza. In the worst case scenario, it was feared that 1500 to 3000 people would die. The report claimed that the administration created a separate task force to deal with the missing and probable dead. However, this alleged document has not been made public by the Iranian government.




  • The report claims that preparations for new graves have been started in Tehran’s Behesht-e-Zahra cemetery. The newspaper quoted an unnamed Tehran Municipal Corporation employee as saying that preparations are real and officials have been asked to be prepared for the worst case scenario. According to the employee, it is difficult to predict what will happen in such a huge crowd and extreme heat. However, the Iranian government has not confirmed any claims regarding the preparation of new graves or the 3,000 possible deaths.

    According to the report, the funeral procession will start from Tehran and end with the burial in Mashhad via Qom, Iraq’s holy city of Najaf and Karbala. Authorities have deployed 11,000 buses in Tehran. Arrangements have been made to run metro and bus services 24 hours free of charge. Temporary kitchens have been set up, while several schools and mosques have been made ready to accommodate people. Special control on traffic and impact on air travel is also expected. The report suggested the possibility of participation of up to two crore people.
