Alexandra Eala stuns Swiatek to reach Wimbledon fourth round

London: Philippines’ Alexandra Eala produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by defeating defending champion and World No. 3 Iga Swiatek 7-6(9), 6-2 in the third round of Wimbledon on Saturday. The 21-year-old left-hander delivered a composed and confident performance on Centre Court to advance to the fourth round and underline her emergence as one of tennis’ brightest young talents.

Emotional victory on Centre Court

Following the biggest win of her career, an emotional Eala reflected on her journey from childhood to the Wimbledon stage.

“I went to train every day after school with my ruffled socks, light-up shoes and chubby cheeks,” she said during her on-court interview.

“It is incredible to have my countrymen cheering me on. This goes out to them, my family and all the girls with ruffled socks and chubby cheeks. It means the world.”

Her victory ended Swiatek’s title defence and marked another significant milestone in the young Filipino’s rapidly rising career.

A breakthrough built on earlier success

Although the result stunned many, Eala’s victory was not entirely unexpected given her recent performances.

Earlier this year, she enjoyed a breakthrough run to the semi-finals of the Miami Open while ranked World No. 140, defeating former French Open champion Jelena OstapenkoAustralian Open champion Madison Keys and then World No. 2 Iga Swiatek before losing to Jessica Pegula.

The Wimbledon triumph also marked her third consecutive victory over a top-10 playerhaving defeated Elina Svitolina and Elena Rybakina on grass in Berlin last month.

The latest result is expected to lift Eala beyond her previous career-best ranking of World No. 29.

Tennis success from a basketball-loving nation

Eala’s rise is particularly remarkable because she comes from the Philippines, where basketball and boxing are among the country’s most popular sports.

She has previously recalled growing up on a court that served both basketball and tennis, joking that she could not move too far behind the baseline because she would run into the basketball hoop.

Despite limited tennis tradition in the country, Eala has steadily developed into one of Asia’s leading players.

Nadal Academy connection

Following Eala’s victory, a video from 2023 resurfaced on social media showing her graduation ceremony at the Rafa Nadal Academywhere Iga Swiatek attended as the guest of honour.

The clip has gained renewed attention after Eala defeated the Polish star on one of tennis’ biggest stages.

Swiatek is currently coached by Francisco Roigwho spent many years as part of Rafael Nadal’s coaching team during the Spaniard’s Grand Slam-winning career.

With confidence growing and another major scalp secured, Eala has firmly established herself as one of the standout performers of this year’s Wimbledon Championships.
