  • DoJ cited 6 major reasons

The big news is that a US court has dropped the criminal charges against famous businessman Gautam Adani for alleged bribery and fraud. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has told a US court that the criminal case filed against businessman Gautam Adani and seven others has been withdrawn for legal and practical reasons. The Department of Justice has given six such reasons. The department said there was no financial loss to the investors in the case and there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations. Moreover, the case was likely to escalate diplomatic tensions between India and the US.

U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garrafis asked the Justice Department why, if the case is being withdrawn, it should be closed forever. The judge had termed the earlier application as ‘vague’. In response, the Justice Department filed a detailed 10-page affidavit.

What did the DoJ say?

The Justice Department told the court that no investor suffered any financial loss in the case. Hence, there was little point in pursuing a criminal case. The department also said that even if the case had been prosecuted, no one would have received compensation as there was no loss.

Question mark on the previous government too

The Department of Justice (DoJ) claimed that the case was filed in haste during the last days of the previous US administration. According to the department, the aim was to tarnish the image of individuals by making accusations, while the chances of actually prosecuting were very slim.

Case closed for these 6 reasons?

The Justice Department said the decision was made after months of reviewing documents and consulting with defense attorneys. The department gave six main reasons:

The alleged incidents took place entirely in India.
Indian investigative agencies have not found any irregularities in the investigation.
There was no financial loss to the investors.
The necessary witnesses and evidence were abroad, making it difficult to collect them.
The chances of the accused appearing in a US court were extremely low.
The case did not fully meet the jurisdictional requirements of US law.

The case was settled for Rs 170 crore

Earlier, Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani agreed to pay $18 million (roughly Rs. 170 crore) to settle a civil case with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) related to alleged misleading statements made by Adani Green Energy Limited.

Whose names came up?

Apart from Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani, Vineet Jain, Ranjit Gupta, Cyril Cabance, Saurabh Agarwal, Deepak Malhotra and Rupesh Agarwal were also implicated in the case. Following the allegations in November 2024, Adani Group’s shares and market value fell significantly. However, after the Department of Justice (DoJ) withdrew the case in May 2025, the group’s shares rose again. Subsequently, Adani Enterprises raised Rs 15,000 crore through a share sale and also signed a contract for a large aluminum plant project worth $11.5 billion.
