Due to the ongoing fierce war in the Middle East and Gulf countries, when there were huge fluctuations in the prices of crude oil and LPG gas all over the world, Indian oil companies have taken a big and historic decision for the energy security of the country. In view of the increasing threats to oil and gas tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, India will no longer depend only on Gulf countries for LPG. Changing its strategy, India is now working on a master plan to purchase more than 22 lakh tonnes of LPG gas annually from America so that there is no shortage of LPG gas in the country during times of crisis.

America becomes the Messiah in times of crisis, dependence on Gulf countries will reduce

India had signed an important year-long agreement with America in November 2025, under which the target was to import about 10 percent of the country’s total LPG requirement from America in the year 2026. But the sudden war that broke out in the Middle East changed the equations completely. Many Indian LPG cargoes and ships coming from Gulf countries got stuck en route, due to which the supply chain of LPG in the country started getting affected. At the time of this great crisis, America emerged as India’s strongest troubleshooter and continued uninterrupted supply of gas, which provided a safe haven to the Indian markets.

New strategic reserve of 30 days and new plan of Petroleum Ministry

To deal with any future shortage of LPG in the country, the Petroleum Ministry has issued a strict instruction to all the government oil companies (OMCs) in the month of May. The Ministry has asked the companies for a complete action plan to prepare a new and special ‘Strategic Petroleum Reserve’ of 30 days. Let us tell you that Indian oil companies already maintain a buffer stock of about 45 days for domestic and commercial gas cylinders, and this new strategic reserve will be in addition to this. This huge purchase from America will help India fill this additional reserve.

India also joined hands with Argentina, Nigeria and Malaysia

According to the report of Times of India (TOI), top officials of oil companies say that apart from the Gulf countries, there are very few countries in the world which produce LPG in large quantities. Since America has huge excess capacity to export LPG, India is taking full advantage of it to diversify its needs. Not only this, to eliminate the risk of being completely dependent on any one country in the future, India has also directly approached other major producing countries like Argentina, Nigeria and Malaysia to import LPG.
