I’ve never tried a more cushioned shoe.

It’s no secret that I loved a cushioned running shoe. I’ve reviewed quite a few with high marks, including the Brooks Ghost Max and my beloved Hoka Skyflow. After testing dozens of sneakers, I can confidently say that none have been quite like the new Hoka Skyward X 2.

Launched this spring, this pair of sneakers takes cushioning to the next level. Not only do these shoes have those max-padded soles, but they also include a carbon plate for a comfortable walking experience I have never had before.

When I first slipped on the Hoka Skyward X 2, I instantly felt a few inches taller—finally nearing my sister’s 5-foot-9-inch height. That novelty wore off as I began walking around. Instead, I couldn’t get over just how unbelievably plush they felt. The cushioning was almost jarring at first, and that sensation continued once I walked with them both outside and on the treadmill.

They’re the most cushioned shoes I have ever worn. The midsole is made from lightweight foam, which keeps the running shoe feathery on the foot. Sandwiched between the insole and tread is a carbon plate that works with the shoe’s rocker shape to make long walks feel easier and more energetic. Combined with that responsive cushioning, the result is a surprisingly smooth stride. You can see just how thick the sole is in the photo below, thanks to the opening in the center. It’s like an inch to get to the carbon plate.

Because of that, walking is fun. I can maintain a pep in my step for miles. The only downside is that the extra-tall cushioning can feel a little wobbly on hills. I just had to be mindful of my balance, and my legs definitely had to work a bit harder as I climbed. Honestly, I enjoyed the challenge; it makes every uphill stretch feel like an extra satisfying push.

Other features that stand out to me are the shoe’s breathable upper and comfortable tongue that hugs the top of my foot. And the colors are super unique. I have the reflective lilac and tangerine combination, and I get heaps of compliments. All colors feature a multi-chrome Hoka logo, which adds a cool touch.

You can snag them in women’s sizes from 5 through 11, and they’re also available in men’s colors and sizes. While I haven’t tested the original Skyward X, I can confidently say that this updated model delivers the plushest ride I’ve ever experienced. If you like to run or walk for miles in comfort without sacrificing speed, the Hoka Skyward X 2s are worth the investment.
