“Yuvraj doesn’t have to say sorry”: Kapil Dev on Yograj Singh’s controversial statements
The 1983 World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev broke his silence on Yograj Singh’s comments on him during a recent interview. The 67-year-old was in conversation with Vikrant Gupta on Sports Tak when the legendary player said he didn’t want to meet bitter people.
Yograj, father of India’s legendary white-ball player Yuvraj Singh, in the past had taken massive swipes at Kapil. The duo were once known to be very good friends and had played together in one Test and six ODI games. The right-arm seamer was eventually dropped from the side and never considered for selection again. Yograj, in the past, not only aimed at his ex-teammate but also at MS Dhoni repeatedly.
During the interview on Sports Tak, the 67-year-old said, “Yuvraj doesn’t have to say sorry on his father’s behalf. He (Yuvraj) was a great player and made the game popular. I’m still friends with his father but don’t want to meet bitter people in real life. Would like to meet happy people, one has to move in, if you stay bitter then people will not love you, he (Yograj) should be happy his son has done well.”
In an interview with the same channel, the former Punjab Kings skipper had expressed regret over his father’s comments and said, “I want to apologize to Kapil and MS Dhoni for his comments. Had told my father the comments weren’t okay. Don’t know what issues they (Yograj and Kapil Dev) had between them.”
Former India skipper opens up on rumours of rift with Sunil Gavaskar
At the height of his career, the Haryana-born legend was considered one of the key players for India along with batting stalwart Sunil Gavaskar. There were constant reports about the two players not getting together in the dressing room. The former skipper refuted these rumours outright in his chat with the channel.
“There was never any problem. The media was doing its job even then. Will stand up and greet Sunil even today if he comes in front of me. What Gavaskar did for India, no player has come close to that. Don’t remember him telling me anything, and it is okay if a senior player comes and scolds you at times if you have played together for a long time,” he said.
