Heavy rain wreaks havoc in Maharashtra, 3 dead due to landslide in Pune, Mumbai-Pune highway and rail service completely halted.

Mumbai, Pune. Due to continuous torrential rains in Maharashtra, situations like floods and landslides have arisen in many parts of the state. In view of this huge devastation, the Meteorological Department (India Meteorological Department) has issued a ‘red alert’ for Pune, Mumbai, Thane and Konkan region. In recent incidents, three people have died tragically due to landslides in Pune, while two people have been reported drowned in Navi Mumbai.

family buried under debris

A large part of a hill collapsed due to heavy rain on Monday morning in Patan village of Pune district. Due to its impact, a local house was completely buried and turned into debris. So far, three bodies of the same family have been recovered from the debris. As soon as information about the incident was received, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and local administration teams reached the spot and started rescue operations.

Accidents in Navi Mumbai and Thane

Due to heavy rains, rivers, streams and waterfalls are in full spate. Two youths who had gone for a picnic near Pandavkada Waterfall in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, were washed away in the strong current. The drowning of one person has also been confirmed in a dam in Thane district. According to state government data, 13 people have lost their lives in Maharashtra so far in the last three days, including the Mankhurd Chawl accident and other incidents.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway stalled, 16 trains cancelled.

Khandala Ghat and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as well as the old Mumbai-Pune Highway had to be closed on both sides due to heavy landslides. At present, the work of removing the debris is going on, but for safety reasons, passengers have been advised not to travel on this route. Apart from this, due to heavy rocks falling on the tracks in the Karjat-Lonavla Ghat section, the railway service has come to a complete halt. The railway administration has canceled a total of 16 important trains including Deccan Queen, Indrayani Express and Deccan Express. Many other trains have been stopped midway.

Schools and colleges closed, advice to work from home

In view of the seriousness of the situation, district collectors in Pune, Mumbai, Thane, Raigarh and Palghar have announced emergency holiday in all schools and colleges today. Along with this, the administration has issued instructions to Hinjewadi IT Park and other private companies to provide ‘work from home’ facility to the employees. The weather department has warned that there may be ‘extremely heavy rainfall’ in Konkan and Ghats areas of western Maharashtra in the next 48 hours. Apart from this, the administration has appealed to the citizens not to leave their homes without any important work.
