Government’s ‘Zero Coal Leakage’ plan: Big initiative to strengthen energy security by stopping coal theft

Knews Desk- Amidst the increasing demand for electricity and increasing consumption of coal in India, the Central Government has taken a big step to strengthen energy security. The government has directed to strictly implement the ‘Zero Coal Leakage’ scheme, the main objective of which is to completely eliminate any kind of theft, illegal mining and leakage in the entire supply chain of coal. Its aim is to ensure safe and transparent supply of every tonne of coal from the mine to the power plant, so that power generation can continue without any hindrance and loss of government revenue can also be prevented.

Recently, the country has seen a rapid increase in the demand for electricity. Due to weak monsoon and scorching heat in June 2026, the use of ACs and coolers increased significantly, taking power consumption to record levels. During the same period, electricity production from coal also increased rapidly, because it still remains the largest source of energy needs of the country. However, despite the increase in solar and wind energy, they have not been able to meet the entire demand, as solar energy is available only during the day and wind and hydro power generation depends on the season.

Under these circumstances, uninterrupted supply of coal has become the priority of the government. But the problem is not limited to production only, but illegal mining and coal theft has remained a serious challenge for a long time. Coal mafia is active in states like Jharkhand, where coal worth thousands of crores of rupees is extracted illegally every year. Several major incidents have also come to light in recent months, in which hundreds of tonnes of coal have been looted and dozens of illegal mines have been closed.

The government has taken many strict steps to stop these problems. CISF and Coal India officials have now been given special powers to conduct search and seizure in illegal mining areas. Quick response teams are being deployed in sensitive mines, which will take immediate action on any suspicious activity. In addition, 24-hour digital surveillance is being provided across the mines and transport network, including high-resolution cameras and control centres. Also, through strict scrutiny of e-way bill, it will be ensured that only legitimate coal reaches the market.

The Government believes that coal theft is no longer just a small-scale problem, but has taken the form of organized crime, which affects both energy security and the economic system. Therefore, the objective of the ‘Zero Coal Leakage’ scheme is not only to stop theft but also to make the entire system transparent and secure, so that the country’s electricity needs can be met without interruption and proper utilization of coal resources can be ensured.
