His grandfather Sardar Harnam Singh Khalda was part of the Gadar movement and was among the passengers of the historic Komagata Maru ship. He also had to go to jail during the British rule. His father Sardar Kartar Singh Khalda was associated with the freedom movement and played an active role in the Quit India Movement. His mother Mukhtar Kaur also carried forward the values of service, courage and justice in the family.
