Ahmedabad Bomb Blast: Almost 18 years ago, a string of bomb explosions rocked Ahmedabad, the financial hub of Gujarat. Within just one hour, 20 bombs went off in busy locations like hospitals, public transport hubs, and markets, resulting in the deaths of 57 individuals and injuries to hundreds more.

Following a trial in Ahmedabad, a total of 49 individuals were found guilty and penalized. Among them, 38 were sentenced to death while 11 received life imprisonment. The Gujarat High Court affirmed these verdicts on July 7, 2026. Notably, the Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the Ahmedabad bombings on July 26, 2008, causing shockwaves across the nation.

The case remained in court for 13 years

A total of 78 accused were tried in the Ahmedabad City Sessions Court. The case, filed in 2009, spanned a 13-year legal process, and the verdict was finally delivered on February 18, 2022. The Sessions Court convicted 49 accused, sentencing 38 to death and 11 to life imprisonment. Twenty-nine were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Meanwhile, 48 accused convicted by the Sessions Court also filed appeals against their sentences in the Gujarat High Court. After hearing both petitions, the Gujarat High Court today delivered its verdict, upholding the death sentences of the convicts.
