Big decision of Gujarat High Court in Ahmedabad serial blast case, death sentence of 38 convicts and life imprisonment of 11 remained intact.
Ahmedabad:Gujarat High Court has given an important verdict in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case that shook the country about 18 years ago. The court has upheld the death sentence given to 38 convicts and life imprisonment to 11 other convicts, upholding the decision of the special court. Along with this, all the appeals filed by the culprits were rejected. The High Court has also ordered a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the blasts. This decision is being considered an important milestone in the judicial process in this much discussed case.
A special bench was formed in the Gujarat High Court to hear this sensitive case. Regular hearing on this matter was going on since March 2025. During the hearing, the state government sought confirmation of the death sentence, while the convicts had filed their appeals challenging the lower court’s decision. After hearing the detailed arguments of both the sides, the court had reserved the decision. Now the High Court, while giving its final decision, accepted the order of the special court as completely correct and rejected all the appeals.
The special court had sentenced in 2022
In this case, the special court of Ahmedabad had given its verdict on 18 February 2022. The court convicted 49 accused and sentenced 38 to death and 11 to life imprisonment. According to Indian law, the death sentence given by any lower court does not come into effect until the concerned High Court confirms it. Under this legal process, this entire matter was under consideration before the Gujarat High Court, where the punishment has now been approved.
The 2008 blasts shook the entire country.
On 26 July 2008, there were several bomb blasts in different parts of the city within a few minutes in Ahmedabad. These explosions shook the entire country. The blasts were carried out in crowded markets, buses and public places, causing huge casualties. More than 50 people lost their lives in these serial blasts, while more than 200 people were injured. Investigative agencies considered it to be one of the most serious terrorist attacks in the country. After this, the investigation continued for several years and a large amount of evidence was collected, on the basis of which a case was initiated against the accused.
After a long hearing, the High Court gave its approval
After the decision of the special court, all the convicts had filed an appeal in the High Court. On the other hand, the state government had filed a petition for confirmation of the death sentence. The High Court, after thoroughly reviewing all the legal aspects and evidence, decided to uphold the lower court’s decision. The court also directed that a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each should be given to the families of those who lost their lives in the blasts. This order is being considered as a relief step for the affected families.
After the decision of Gujarat High Court, judicial approval has been given on the death sentence of 38 convicts and life imprisonment of 11 convicts. However, under Indian law, the convicts still have the right to appeal to the country’s highest court, the Supreme Court.
