Can ATM be shut down through mobile app? Viral video increases concern, know what is the whole truth
ATM Viral Video Security In India: These days, a video is going viral on social media in which two people are seen claiming to first turn off the ATM machine and then turn it on again with the help of a mobile app. The face of any person is not clearly visible in this video, but the interface of the app looks quite similar to the app named BAT-BMS which was recently in the news for remote stopping of e-rickshaws. After this video surfaced, questions started rising in people’s minds whether ATM machines can now also be controlled through mobile apps?
BAT-BMS app has already made headlines
A few days ago, it was seen that incidents of remote shutdown of many e-rickshaws were being reported through Chinese mobile apps like BAT-BMS and Lossigy. After investigating this matter, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) of the Government of India had directed Google Play Store and Apple App Store to remove such apps. After this, many apps including BAT-BMS were removed from the stores. This is the reason why people’s concern has increased after seeing the app seen in the viral video.

Can ATM really be controlled through app?
Cyber security experts say that at present there is no evidence to prove that a normal mobile app can remotely turn on or off the ATM machine. ATMs are connected to the bank’s secure network, VPN connection and multi-layer firewall. Apart from this, operations in these machines are done only through controlled access system and authorized bank servers. Experts believe that there could be many reasons behind the incident seen in the video. It is possible that the ATM may already be in the reboot process, the video may have been recorded at the right time, or the illusion may have been created through editing and timing. It is also possible that the purpose of the video is only to go viral on social media.

Check the facts before panicking
Be advised that in the digital age, immediate trust in viral videos can be harmful. If any video makes a claim related to banking or cyber security, then definitely verify it from official sources or experts. At present, no evidence has emerged that the ATM is controlled through any common mobile app. In such a situation, the safest way is to avoid rumors and rely on fact-based information.
