Cricket News: Veteran who took 700 wickets became Zimbabwe’s bowling coach, has also worked with Bangladesh team

Zimbabwe had performed brilliantly in the T20 World Cup. The team topped Group-B and reached the Super-8 stage. After this performance, the board decided to maintain continuity in the coaching staff.

Courtney Walsh has extensive coaching experience at the international level. He served as the bowling coach of the Bangladesh cricket team for three years from September 2016. After the resignation of Chandika Hathurusingha in the year 2018, he also remained the interim head coach of the team for some time.

After this, in October 2020, Walsh was made the head coach of the West Indies women’s cricket team. Her tenure ran until the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup, after which her contract was not extended.

Zimbabwe Cricket has also expressed confidence in the coaching and support staff of the senior team. Justin Sammons will remain as head coach. Along with him, batting assistant coach Dion Ibrahim, fielding and lower-order batting coach Stuart Matsikanyeri, strength and conditioning coach Curtly Diesel, team doctor Dr. Solomon Madjogo, team manager Dilip Chauhan, logistics manager Lovemore Banda and media manager Darlington Majonga will continue to perform their responsibilities.

The board has also made a succession plan in the team management keeping in mind the preparation for the future. Former Zimbabwe cricketer Chamu Chibhabha will be developed into team management. David Mutendera will remain the convenor of the selection committee, while former international players Hamilton Masakadza and Christopher Mpofu have been made selectors.

Elton Chigumbura will remain the head coach of the Under-19 team, while former all-rounder Donald Tiripano has been made the bowling assistant coach. Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman Tavenga Mukuhlani said the appointments were a great blend of experience, expertise and fresh thinking. He believes that this will provide a new direction to the development of the national team and young players and Zimbabwe Cricket will be successful in achieving its long-term goals.
