Celtics’ Brad Stevens teases major moves after Jaylen Brown trade
The Boston Celtics shocked the world by moving on from Jaylen Brown.
Not only was the trade surprising, but the fact that they sent him to the Philadelphia 76ers for pennies on the dollar turned even more heads.
Nevertheless, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens actually seems pretty happy with the return his team got for Brown’s services.
When discussing his thought process and the team’s potential next moves after parting ways with their Finals MVP, he raved about how the expanded war chest gave them a better shot at making a big swing at another star.
The Celtics have enough picks to make a big move
“From the draft assets, I get it. I am a fan first and foremost. When I was a kid, I could care less about what picks came back, right? Especially second-round picks. I get it. But the draft assets in this whole deal, the way we looked at it is, they’re two potential premium assets. And so the quality of the assets, the ’31 Philly and the super-complicated 2028 pick, both offer potential — who knows? — big swings at the apple,” Stevens said.
Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll make a move right away. There might not be anyone who fits their current needs or who is available at a reasonable price.
That said, this gives them more than enough wiggle room to keep their options open and potentially make an aggressive run at the next disgruntled star.
The Celtics were one of the leading candidates to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they reportedly weren’t willing to meet their asking price or his contract aspirations.
Now, with more draft assets because of the Brown trade, they might take a different approach the next time they get to the table to bargain.
