Cloud burst caused devastation in Jammu and Kashmir, roads including buildings affected, rescue operations underway.
New Delhi: Heavy devastation was seen in Doda and Kishtwar districts of Jammu and Kashmir after cloud burst on Sunday night. Life was affected in many areas due to mud, debris and rocks brought with heavy rains. The administration has intensified relief and rescue operations in the affected areas, while repair work on damaged roads is also underway.
There was no loss of life
The 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Project under construction in Kishtwar has been worst affected by the cloudburst. Many trucks, dozers and other heavy construction equipment were buried due to the sudden debris and huge stones that came near the tunnel area of the project. Apart from this, construction material has also suffered a lot of damage. It is a matter of relief that no employee was present at the project site at the time of the incident, due to which there was no loss of life.

The incident has also affected National Highway-244 connecting Doda-Kishtwar. The highway is currently closed for traffic due to accumulation of large amount of mud, rocks and debris on the road. Teams of administration and related departments have reached the spot and are engaged in the work of removing debris, cleaning and restoration of the road. An appeal has been made to the passengers not to use this route at present and follow the traffic advisory issued by the administration.
Heavy damage caused by cloud burst
Cloud burst has also caused heavy damage in the upper areas of Prem Nagar in Doda district. A flood-like situation was created in the market here, while due to the sudden increase in flow of water and debris in the drain, some houses and a temple located in low-lying areas have been damaged. Many vehicles are also buried under the debris, an operation is being conducted to rescue them.
According to officials, relief work gained momentum due to clear weather on Monday. At present, no major untoward incident has been reported from other parts of the district. Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that there has been no loss of life in this natural disaster.
Keeping an eye on the affected areas
At the same time, reports of flood like situation have also come from the high altitude areas of Reasi district. Due to continuous rain near Bapp village of Chinaini, a part of Mantalai-Lati road caved in, due to which the traffic on this route has been completely disrupted. The administration is constantly monitoring the situation in the affected areas and is taking necessary steps.
