Spain’s big statement after Donald Trump’s threat, says relations with US are “very good”
Diplomatic tension has deepened between US President Donald Trump and Spain. Recently in a dramatic turn, Trump has threatened to end all trade relations with Spain, terming it a “worthless partner”. During the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump accused Spain of not cooperating in defense spending and being overly dependent on the US for security.
Trump said in harsh words, “Spain is a very bad partner in NATO. They neither participate nor pay. I do not want to do any trade business with Spain anymore.” Let us tell you that Spain is the only NATO member that has refused to accept the target of defense spending of 5% of GDP by 2035. Madrid is currently spending only 2.1% of its GDP on military, which Trump considers against his policies.
However, despite Trump’s sharp remarks, Spain has maintained restraint. The Spanish Prime Minister’s Office has issued a formal statement downplaying these statements. Madrid says Spain and the United States have deep social, cultural and economic ties, and these statements will not affect them.
Experts believe that this tension is not limited to defense spending only. Spain’s criticism of US military action against Iran and its decision to block the use of US facilities in southern Spain have also soured relations with Washington. At present, the eyes of the entire world are on whether this diplomatic standoff will turn into a trade war.
