The government has launched ‘Handloom Hackathon 2026’, a national level innovation competition with an aim to promote technology, design, entrepreneurship and sustainable solutions in India’s handloom sector. The Union Ministry of Textiles announced this in an official statement on Wednesday. Organized by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handloom) under the Ministry of Textiles on the occasion of National Handloom Day 2026, the grand finale of the hackathon will be held on August 1 at the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), IIT Delhi. The selected teams will present their innovations and solutions at the grand finale, which will be evaluated by experts in the fields of education, industry, design, technology and handloom. will be done by a jury.

Development Commissioner (Hatham) M. Bina said that the objective of ‘Handloom Hackathon 2026’ is to connect the creative minds of the youth of India with the country’s rich handloom heritage. He said that the initiative will seek to develop practical and widely applicable solutions that will address the key challenges facing the handloom sector, enhance its competitiveness and contribute to its sustainable development. The platform will bring together weavers, students, designers and technical experts to promote collaboration.
Students studying textiles, fashion, design, engineering, management and technology, handloom weavers, artisans, researchers, startups, entrepreneurs, innovators and professionals from various fields will participate in the competition. The hackathon invites innovative solutions on topics such as product and design innovation, sustainable development and circular economy, digital technology, market access, branding, supply chain efficiency, productivity enhancement, business development and social impact.
According to the Ministry, online registration will be open till 20th July 2026 and interested participants can register and submit their ideas through the Hackathon’s online portal. The aim of the Government of India is to identify effective and viable solutions that can be selected for mentoring, incubation and further development in collaboration with partner organizations, if required.
The Ministry of Textiles said that the initiative will promote modernization, competitiveness and long-term sustainability of the handloom sector, as well as encourage greater collaboration between India’s handloom ecosystem and the country’s innovation and startup ecosystem.
