CUET NEET Candidates Data Leak: ‘Kundli’ of CUET-NEET students is being sold at throwaway prices in the country, after the paper now the data is leaked!

New Delhi. Serious questions have been raised on the security of candidates and agencies conducting examinations in the country (Candidates Data Leak). A shocking incident has come amid the controversies of paper leak. Personal data of lakhs of students appearing for national entrance examinations and board examinations is being sold on the internet. Confidential information of candidates of exams like NEET and CUET-NEET like name, mobile number, email and parents’ names are available at throwaway prices on some websites.

‘Digital Personal Data Protection’ (DPDP) Act is being implemented in the country. In such a situation, this illegal business has sparked a debate regarding student privacy protection. These websites are selling data to private universities and admission consultants, so that they can target students for admission. While the data selling companies are justifying it, the unwanted calls and messages coming every day are giving sleepless nights to the students and their parents. Some major websites active on the Internet (like studentdataprovider.com, studentsdatabases.com and bulkstudentdata.com) are present in the market of students’ data. Here the prices have been fixed according to the size of the data and the states/cities of the students, which starts from just Rs 1,000 and goes up to Rs 10,000. In order to trap more and more children in the admission season, colleges and consultants are buying data from these websites at wholesale rates.

Data of more than 15 lakh CUET students is at stake

The limit was reached when the listing with the name “CUET-2026 Exam Database” was made live on the website named studentdataprovider.com. This database claims to have complete records of more than 15 lakh candidates who appeared for the CUET exam. Not only this, to reassure the customers, the website has also shared the data of 500 students as ‘free sample’, in which information ranging from their application number to date of birth, gender and quota category can be clearly seen.

New DPDP law flouted, provision for heavy fine

The open sale of students’ data is flouting the intentions of the country’s new Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. According to this law, personal data of any person cannot be used for any other purpose without his consent or consent. There is a provision of a huge fine of up to Rs 250 crore for such violations in the law, however, the strict rules of this law are to be implemented from the year 2027. Perhaps that is why these data thieves are roaming around without fear.

NTA’s shunning and strange arguments of data companies

When the uproar on this matter increased, the National Testing Agency (NTA) in its clarification said that they keep the privacy of the candidates on top. NTA claims that they share the results with the universities only through secure and government DigiLocker or API platform. On the other hand, companies like ‘Bulk Students Data’ of Delhi are justifying this business by saying that using this data for marketing is not illegal. At present the IT Ministry (MeitY) is talking about investigating this matter.
