Ayatollah Khamenei was killed in a joint air strike by the US and Israel on 28 February 2026. His funeral was postponed several times due to security reasons and huge crowd. Under Islamic law, burials are allowed to be delayed during times of war, so the event was held in July. Khamenei wished that he be buried at the Shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad.

Millions of people were expected to attend the funeral, due to which five public holidays were declared in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad. After Tehran and Qom, prayers were also held in Iraq’s holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. Along with him four other members of the family—Dr. Misbah al-Huda Bakri Kani, Sayyida Bushra Hosseini Khamenei, Zahra Haddad Adil and Zahra Mohammadi Golpaygani are also being buried.

Khamenei’s son Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed the new Supreme Leader on 8 March 2026, although he has not yet appeared in public since the attack. At the same time, today again there are reports of American attacks on Iran, which is being said to be revenge for the attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
